Ailsa at wheresmybackpack is asking us for pictures illustrating “Red” this week. Here’s mine – taken in the same general part of the world as hers, actually.
The Painted Desert in northeastern Arizona – one of the reddest places I’ve ever seen, and another spot like Niagara Falls where people just stand and stare in astonishment.

What makes it red?
There’s a lot of iron in the rock.
That makes sense
so much space
Yes – it goes on as far as the eye can see.
Wow – that’s a lot of red! Great shot!
Thanks! Actually, the whole secret is getting yourself there – after that, you can close your eyes and aim the camera anywhere, and you’ll have a photo full of red. 🙂
That must be mesmerising 🙂
Yes, it is! When we first got there, I must have spent fifteen minutes just standing and looking with a big goofy grin on my face. And other people were doing the same thing. (This photo was taken from an overlook at the edge of the Painted Desert.)
I missed this when I lived in Arizona – major bummer!! But at least I get to see your photograph.
Sorry I was confusing – this is in Wyoming (in Yellowstone Park), not in Arizona! (Gah! I got confused about which post you were commenting on and thought you were referring to the “Weekly Photo Challenge” picture. Yes, this is in Arizona. And now I need an emoticon for total embarrassment…)
Maybe you’ll get a chance to visit Arizona again sometime? Unfortunately, the Painted Desert is up in an empty corner of the state, not convenient to much of anything else, but if you’re going to be anywhere near Four Corners, it’s worth detouring to see it.
