Late again, but here’s my hundred words of Friday Fictioneering for this week –
Decorating
I don’t much care about interior decorating. I try to be polite, though. The other day my friend Kath showed me her place. New kitchen, what great cabinets, living room, LOVE the rug.
“But now I’ll show you the best part,” Kath announced. “I thought I’d never figure out what to do with this little corner.”
Books. Oh, the books. “It’s wonderful,” I said, and I meant it.
“Isn’t it cute wallpaper?” Kath said. I stumbled across the tiny room, reaching. Flat. Only pictures of books. “I can tell you where to get it.”
I shook my head. “I’d just have to build shelves in front of it.”

Hi Sharon – I’m late as well…right behind you. Enjoyed your story. I never knew they sold wallpaper depicting fake books. I’d build shelves also. Well done.
Well, welcome to the latecomers! Thank you – glad you like it. I don’t know if they sell fake book wallpaper either, really, though one wall of my dining room is a “forest”.
I love it, I laughed, I would build shelves too, I have books everywhere.
I’m so glad you like it! We have books all over the house, even the basement – they’re stored in every room but the kitchen.
Thanks for a great story! And when you reach for a book? Wallpaper may be cool to look at, but with shelves, you can feel the books, open the, read them. 🙂

Very clever, does it exist? what on earth would be the point?
Actually, I don’t know if it exists or not – I have seen photographic or trompe l’oeil wallpaper with other subjects, though. And the point? Well, if you don’t actually like books, I suppose you might think “Oh, original and eyecatching, and you don’t have to bother dusting all that junk!” (Meanwhile, I’d be trying to figure out how to make myself two-dimensional so I could read the poor flat books!)
Reminds me of those people who buy old books ‘by the yard’ to fill up bookshelves! Very original 🙂

This is a brilliant take… and sad too. Such wallpapers exist… should be banned,
Oh well, I wouldn’t actually ban them – at least the “Kaths” of this world are living with pictures of books, even if they don’t want the real thing cluttering up their homes 😉 But I’m glad you like the story!
when my boss retired and moved south, the house planner had him remove all his built in bookshelves. People don’t want them she said. He removed them and sold the house in a week.
Well, selling in a week is quite an accomplishment! (A couple I know took nearly four years to sell a house.) But I guess it’s just as well we don’t have any plans to move any time soon – that’s a lot of books to hide.
I promised Janet ( my wife ) a library when we moved to our next house.

My belated paternal grandmother was always very dismayed by my blind eye when it comes to decorating and fashion.
That must have been frustrating for both of you! At least I fit right in with my family in that way.

Very funny. I saw something on TV I think about some guy who had pictures that looked like the real deal from certain angles. So you’d see a cup and a phone on a table, then when you moved closer you would realise the cup was a cutout picture (but the phone was real)
I think I’ve seen pictures like that too – wonder if it was the same guy?
